Looking for studio apartment essentials? I got you! Furnishing a 400 sq. ft. studio apartment can feel a little overwhelming at first, because every single piece matters. When you’re working with a small space, you can’t just buy things because they’re cute (well, you can… keep reading!!)… they also have to be functional, space-saving, and actually make your apartment easier to live in.

When I moved into my studio apartment, I focused on finding pieces that were aesthetic, practical, and storage-friendly. And honestly? That made ALL the difference.

So here’s everything I bought for my 400 sq ft studio apartment, and why each piece was 100% worth it.

Upholstered Storage Bed (Must-Have for Small Apartments)

An upholstered storage bed is easily one of the best purchases you can make for a studio apartment or small space.

Not only is my upholstered storage bed (if I repurchase, I will get the bright white option – love it!) super cute and aesthetic, but it also has built-in storage (amazing, right!?), which is a must when you don’t have a ton of extra space. I use mine to store things like extra bedding, off-season clothes, and random items I don’t need every day. If you end up purchasing this bed, which I definitely think you SHOULD if you’re in a studio apartment/small apartment, I recommend looking into these under-the-bed storage containers – they are great and so, so spacious. 

Again, this bed is affordable (like, SO affordable!), high quality, and honestly one of the smartest pieces in my apartment.

Small White Sectional (Perfect for Studio Apartment Living Rooms)

Finding a couch for a studio apartment can be tricky because of size and space constraints, but this small white sectional was perfect for my space. Like, perfect! I will admit that it is super hard to keep it perfectly white, but I still love it. 

My little white couch/sectional (since it comes with an ottoman) is compact enough to fit comfortably without overwhelming the room, but still big enough to feel cozy and functional. Plus… it’s just so cute. It makes the living area/section feel like an actual “living room,” even though everything is technically in one space. Trust me, it works! Hehe. But, this cloud couch sectional is on my wishlist 🤩 A girl can dream.. I will get it eventually! Anyways, here is my couch/sectional I currently have:

Spacious Console Table (Underrated Storage Hack)

My console table/tv stand (that is not being used as a TV stand lol) is one of those pieces that doesn’t get enough credit. It has multiple sections, which makes it perfect for storing literally anything — decor, books, random essentials, baskets, you name it. Not to mention it is sturdy and higher quality (even though it was very, very affordable). I currently have so nasty random things stored in it, but it truly is the most perfect console table/tv stand ever. 

In a studio apartment/small apartment, pieces like this are so important because they combine storage + style.

Bouclé Accent Chair (Because… Why Not?)

Okay… not gonna lie to ya’ll… this one is a little bit of a “just because I wanted it” purchase 😌 Did I need it? No. Did I want it? Absolutely. So, I got it. Haha. Anyways, my bouclé chair adds so much personality to my space. It makes the apartment feel cozy, elevated, and a little more “put together.” Honestly, I love my little corner nook! Cute af. 

Not *everything* has to be purely functional — you still deserve cute pieces that make you happy. But, always remember that MOST everything should be functional in your studio apartment/small apartment to make the space work in your favor.

Spacious Nightstands (Every Inch Matters)

If you live in a studio apartment, you already know… Every. Inch. Matters. 

That’s why I made sure to get nightstands with actual storage space. Mine hold literally everything from chargers to random essentials I reach for daily. Seriously, the drawers are deep which is so, so nice. And while I need to be better about organizing the insides of the nightstands (more on this later), the outsides of them are cute, right? 😉 

The only issue I have with these IKEA Nightstands is that they have chipped a little. But, they were super, super inexpensive and the drawers are really deep, so I don’t really let the quality get to me. However, if you want a similar, high-end, and more expensive version of my brown IKEA nightstands, check out these nightstands from ZYX 🤩 – amazing, right? They’re on my wishlist! 

Also, do NOT underestimate nightstands — they’re lowkey one of the most important storage spots in your apartment. I promise!

Roomy Dresser (For Non-Hanging Clothes)

A good, spacious dresser (I have it under my TV, but it’s a legit dresser haha) is 1000% essential, especially if you don’t have a huge closet. Which I don’t (and you probably won’t either if you’re in a studio or small apartment). Sucks, but oh well. 

My cute and aesthetic Amazon dresser holds all the clothes I don’t hang, and it keeps everything organized and easy to find. It also helps prevent your space from feeling cluttered (major win!!), which is super important in a studio apartment/small apartment. I will admit that this dresser was on the cheaper side, but I got it because it was in my budget and matches my aesthetic. Win, win. But, please note that it does chip/knick a little 😭. But, nothing some good ‘ole chip paint (love this product!!) can’t fix… or even just a black permanent marker lol. Oh, and I recommend these drawer organizers!

Desk with Drawer Storage (Perfect for Work or School)

If you’re a student (like me) or just need a workspace, a desk with drawer storage is such a game changer. Like, how pretty is she!? She (yes, my desk is a she, because why not lol) is so high-end looking and guess what!? She is UNDER $100! Buy this desk NOW it. I didn’t, lol. 

You can work or study (or even eat here, because let’s be real – most studio apartments do not have an eating nook/area) while keeping everything organized and out of sight. It helps your space feel way more put together instead of chaotic. Nobody likes/wants chaos. So, do yourself a favor and invest in a desk that has deep drawers. Again, I cannot recommend my super cute desk enough! 10/10! 

Clear Command Hooks (Small but Mighty)

Command hooks are such a simple addition, but they make a huge difference. I use clear command hooks to hang purses, jewelry, and other small items. Oh and I also use them in my kitchen to organize all of my spice packets. Before you judge me, it works! Command hooks are renter-friendly, easy to install (like seriously so, so easy!), and help free up space in drawers, cabinets, and closets.

Large Floor-Length Mirror (Makes Your Space Feel Bigger)

A floor-length mirror is literally a must-have. Like, literally. I actually want a black floor length mirror (this one is on my wishlist) now that I am pretty much out of my everything-has-to-be-gold phase (IYKYK). But, for now, it’ll do! 

Not only is it perfect for outfit checks and selfies (obviously), but it also reflects light and makes your apartment feel bigger and more open. I promise this is true, trust me! AGAIN, If you are in a studio apartment or just a small apartment in general, every inch matters, and anything that can make your apartment look or feel bigger is a WIN. That said, get a large floor-length mirror ASAP. 

If you’re trying to make a small apartment look bigger, this is one of the easiest tricks.

Ring Doorbell (Safety First!!)

Living alone means safety is always a priority. Always, always, always. My Ring doorbell gives me peace of mind because I can see who’s at my door at any time. Whether you’re in a studio apartment or not, security is something you should never skip. Also, I guess I am today-years-old because I am just now seeing that there are Ring doorbell camera covers??? Nobody told me! I have this Ring doorbell cover in my Amazon cart because how stinking cute!!!

Security Door Stopper (Sleep Better at Night)

This might be one of my favorite purchases for peace of mind. If you are a true crime fan that now gets scared of everything (guilty!! you’re not alone lol trust me), you will definitely want this security door stopper; it’s the one I have. 

A security door stopper adds an extra layer of protection, especially if you live alone. It’s simple, affordable, and honestly helps you sleep better at night. Now, it is NOT aesthetically pleasing or cute, but it does get the job done and it will make you feel even safer in your space.

Upholstered Storage Desk Chair (Functional + Cute)

My upholstered storage (desk) chair is one of my favorite “investments.” It was not cheap, but it also wasn’t insanely expensive either??? I just haven’t bought a desk chair that was more than $100 like ever, so… yeah haha. 

It’s an upholstered desk chair with storage with wheels, which means it’s doing multiple jobs at once — EXACTLY what you need in a studio apartment/small apartment. It was a little pricier, around $200, but it matches my aesthetic perfectly AND adds extra storage… so I truly have no regrets. Like, zero regrets. Look how high end it looks ⤵

Final Thoughts: Be Intentional with Every Piece 

When you’re furnishing a studio apartment, the biggest thing to remember is to be intentional. Every item in your studio apartment/small apartment should either:

• serve a purpose
• add storage
• improve your space
• or make you happy (like my cutie lil’ boucle chair hahaha)

Ideally… ALL of the above. Just being honest! Creating a functional, aesthetic small apartment is completely possible, you just have to choose the right pieces. And, again, you HAVE to be intentional about everything!
