Living in a studio apartment can feel like a challenge at first — because everything happens in one space. Your bedroom, living room, kitchen, and sometimes even your workspace are all… like RIGHT there.
But here’s the thing: once you figure out how to make a small space work for you, studio apartment living can actually feel cozy, intentional, and honestly kind of perfect. I promise. Don’t believe me? I get it, just hear me out.
After living in my own 400 sq ft studio apartment (tiktok link here), I’ve learned a few things that make a huge difference. These are the best tips for living in a studio apartment that will help you stay organized, maximize your space, and still keep everything cute.
1. Create Zones in Your Studio Apartment
Just because it’s one room doesn’t mean it has to feel like one room.
One of the best things you can do in a studio apartment is create separate zones for different parts of your life:
- sleeping area
- living area
- workspace
- kitchen
- *bathroom*
- *closet(s)*
You can use things like rugs, room dividers (this one is SO PRETTY!), furniture placement, or even lighting to visually divide the space. It makes your apartment feel more structured and way less chaotic. This is how I have my bedroom area and living room area divided:

2. Choose Multifunctional Furniture
In a small apartment, every piece of furniture needs to do the most. I talk more in-depth about the importance of multifunctional furniture in this post, so be sure to check that out! However, though self-explanatory, multifunctional furniture pieces will do a lot of the work (space-saving + function) for you. That said, think:
- Storage beds | this is my storage bed and I literally love it
- Storage ottomans | I do not have one, but I do LOVE this storage ottoman!
- Storage chair(s) | this is my storage chair – love it so much but it IS about $200 🤷♀️
- Desks with drawers | this is my spacious AND SUPER AFFORDABLE desk
- Spacious nightstands | these are my spacious IKEA nightstands (the drawers are SO deep)
- Spacious dresser | this is my spacious and inexpensive dresser (p.s. the black dresser is sold out right now – sorry!)
- Spacious tv stand/console table | this is my spacious tv stand/console table – obsessed 🤩
- Couches with hidden storage | my current couch doesn’t have storage but it’s small, cute, and fits in a studio/small apartment
- Storage coffee table | I do not have one BUT this storage coffee table is amazing!
Multifunctional furniture is honestly the secret to making a studio apartment feel bigger and more organized. If it’s not functional… it probably (you can make an exception or two hehe) doesn’t belong in your space.

3. Use Vertical Storage (Seriously)
If you’re running out of space, look up. Like, actually look up lol. Vertical storage is one of the easiest ways to maximize a small apartment without taking up more floor space. You can read more about vertical storage here, but for now, I will keep it super simple (you’re welcome lol). To achieve vertical storage, use:
- shelves |
- wall hooks | I love my clear command hooks, but these hooks are good too if you want to hang coats, jackets, keys…
- tall furniture |
- hanging organizers |
Utilizing vertical storage keeps your apartment feeling open while still giving you plenty of storage.
4. Keep Your Surfaces Clear
Clutter shows up fast in a studio apartment. Like, really, really fast 😭 Because everything is pretty much in one room, messy surfaces can make your space feel smaller and more overwhelming than it actually is. So, to prevent any and all chaos from occurring in your studio apartment/small apartment, try to keep:
- kitchen counters (this is a struggle for me – more on this later!)
- coffee tables
- nightstands
- dressers / console tables
- desks
…as clear as possible! It instantly makes your apartment feel cleaner, calmer, and more put together.
5. Be Intentional With What You Bring In
This one is big. When you live in a studio apartment, you don’t have the luxury of holding onto things “just because.” Sorry, but that is the truth. So, if you like holding on to everything and struggle to get rid of things you no longer need/things that do not serve a purpose, a studio apartment may not be the best fit for you :/
So, before you buy something, ask yourself:
- Do I actually need this?
- Does it have a purpose?
- Does it fit my space?
The more intentional you are, the easier it is to keep your apartment functional and organized. Promise!

6. Use Mirrors to Make Your Space Feel Bigger
A large, floor-length mirror can completely change how your studio apartment feels! Like I talked about in my post of everything I have bought for my studio apartment (so far 😜), mirrors reflect light and create the illusion of more space, which is exactly what you want in a studio apartment/small apartment.
A floor-length mirror is especially perfect because it:
- makes the room feel larger
- adds brightness
- gives you a full outfit check moment (obviously *flips hair*)

7. Focus on Function First, Aesthetic Second
We all want a cute apartment (trust me, I get it), but in a studio apartment/small apartment… function has to come first. Once your space works for your day-to-day life, then you can layer in decor and make everything aesthetic. When your apartment is functional, it naturally feels:
- less cluttered
- more comfortable
- easier to maintain 🙌
And honestly… that’s the real goal.
Final Thoughts: Small Space, Big Potential
Living in a studio apartment is all about being intentional. You DO NOT need a huge space to create something that feels like home. You just need the right systems, the right furniture, and a little bit of planning.
Once you figure out what works for your lifestyle, your studio apartment can feel:
- cozy
- organized
- functional
- and completely yours (eek! yay!)
